The Battle of Otten Village - Part 3

Suddenly everything had fallen quiet, the last frantic blows of the battle had been struck and all that was left to do was count the dead.

In total I had four Skaven, three Beastman and one of the Trolls knocked out, but luckily every one of my models recovered with only minor injuries. Fred, the bull-headed Beastman, had an eye injury which reduces his Ballistic Skill (oh no!) and the yellow Troll, who has been named Nars, suffered a broken nose. Given the description of a nose injury in the book, I am less than worried:

"The character's nose is smashed in and looks really awful. This doesn't affect the game, but the Champion's youthful looks are ruined forever."

Lars and Nars. Due to this injury, Lars is now considered the 'pretty' one.

The Fimir were less fortunate as three of the Fimm died from their injuries. On the other hand all the hardier Fianna Fimm, including Fergus survived with only some minor grazes between them. The only lasting afflictions were Fergus's ear being torn off, and one of the Fimm suffering an eye injury. Eye injuries are pretty unfortunate when you only have one to start with!

To keep the bookkeeping to a minimum, I think we'll ignore minor injuries on non-character models during battles. We'll keep recording them for background purposes in case they start accumulating though.

The Fimir had seen better days, but everyone important had managed to survive.

Lastly, we worked out the rewards that Dorrin earned for the battle. He received one for surviving the scenario and another half for defeating Fergus in single combat, the half reward is carried over until the next game. This isn't enough for more followers to join him on a permanent basis (Followers are only added after every second reward), but I do get to generate rewards for both Dorrin and for one of his followers.

For Dorrin I initially rolled a chaos attribute - limb transference - and I'm not afraid to say that my heart sank a little bit. That would be a colossal pain to model at the best of times but especially so on a figure that has already been painted and converted so I opted to refuse it and take a Khornate reward instead and got 'Face of a Juggernaut'. Hmm... definitely more interesting. Face rewards can be given to followers instead so with my opponent's permission I changed the result to 'Face of a Flesh Hound' and gave it to one of my Beastmen, Hermann 'Wuffles' Foerster.

I also chose to give my follower reward to Wuffles and rolled up multiple (3!) rewards which I was allowed to distribute at my discretion. The first one, given to my furry hero-to-be as originally planned, granted +1 Strength and Toughness. Result!

Wuffles hulking out of his jerkin. He'll be a fine champion one day.

Light Armour, Shield and Hand Weapon.
One of his attacks is a poisoned bite attack.

The other two rewards went to Melondil who was not as lucky. His first reward was the 'One Eye' attribute which caused him to lose an eye permanently, halving his Ballistic Skill. That's pretty unfortunate for the only model in my warband with a ranged weapon.

The second was the 'Acid Excretion' attribute, that doesn't sound so bad, right? Well, turns out he is no longer able to use non-magical arms or armour and (presumably) excreting acid also leaves you with incredibly dry skin. On the other hand he is now able to destroy weapons and armour that he touches in combat. Clearly Khorne was unimpressed with his performance during combat. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about him being a rubbish shot with a crossbow any more and I now have a plan for how to use him in the future...

I really don't want to search the Internet for naked elf models.

Improvised Weapon (-1 to hit, target has +1 armour save - see WFB3 p84).
Blind in one eye, excretes acid.

As the final Fianna fell, holding out to the last to buy time for his kin to flee the battlefield, Melondil started to feel very uncomfortable - his left eye starting to itch. The skaven around him noticed something was amiss and started to back off, chittering between themselves excitedly.  Melondil fell to his knees, clutching his face. One of his eyes could be seen melting and slipping out between his fingers, a gush of acid pouring out of the hole in his face where it used to be. The scream could be heard throughout the village. Thick, sickly green and smoking liquid melted through his clothing and armour and he collapsed onto the ground, weeping from his remaining eye and in unimaginable pain. Khorne was not pleased with his failure.

Dorrin felt no concern for the elf; the whisper told him that this was how things were meant to be. If Melondil was not able to serve as Dorrin's sword, then he would serve as Dorrin's shield instead. So much for the might of the Elves.

The next battle will take place at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham this coming weekend. Will Dorrin face off against the Dirach? Will Wuffles continue his ascent to daemonhood? Will Melondil redeem himself in the eyes of his God? Will Fergus get his revenge? Is that the sound of hooves in the distance?

Stay tuned.
