Painting the Enemy

This is embarrassingly overdue, but I've finally started painting up my Nomads from Icestorm. I want to get the entire force completed for the Excelsior Infinity Day I'll be running on 7th February where it will be one of the available demo armies - along with my Aleph, Haqq and PanO. If you are in the Bristol area on that day then please do come down and say hi!

I started work on the female alguacile first because she has a more 'open' pose, with her arms outstretched. The two male models have their guns held in both hands across the front of their bodies which makes painting trickier.

Sorry that the gun is a little out of focus though - it was a bit of a photography fail and I used terrible lighting. I'm going to get a lightbox of some kind sorted out soon. Also, I managed to leave a horrible mould line on the front of her right boot which I hate myself for a bit...

She needs a name, any ideas?

Firstly I just want to say that I really like the sculpts. The face is really sharp and stern and I love the segmented look to the body armour, it seems almost natural, insectile even. The confident striding pose is excellent too - she looks like she won't take crap from anyone!

I wanted to straddle the line between the official paint scheme and something radically different, so I've got all these reds and greys and then added the warm orange and brown colours to complement it.

The basic colours on the model (again, please reference the colour conversion chart for any older ones) are Red Gore, P3 Ember Orange and Administratum Grey. I chose Vermin Brown for the leathery parts because it matches the oranges and reds fairly well. The gun is painted with Vallejo Dark Grey and the entire model is washed with Agrax Earthshade.

I've tried to be quite gentle with the highlighting, the majority of the model has only had two stages - one with the original colour and one with a little while thrown in. I was concerned that if the highlights were too bright then the colours would end up all looking quite pale and pastel.

... and the view from behind,

The next two alguaciles are already on the painting table and should be done in the next day or so, which means I've got a decent chance of getting everything done by the 7th and still keeping up with my commitments for the escalation league.

Speaking of the league, everything is going well so far. I've been taking a Ghulam heavy list that's been quite handily dealing with bikes, werewolves, heavy infantry and ninjas. The entire force is quite squishy, but having a WIP 14 Doctor Plus with a Servant remote hugely increases the survivability of my troops. I feel like I really need to go back to basics with this faction and un-learn a lot of the habits I picked up with Aleph.

In other news, I've got some Battlefleet Gothic stuff sitting in Fairy Power Spray at the moment, once I've decided on a colour scheme I'll be starting work on them. No idea what colours to go for though, any ideas?
